Aloe  vera, commonly known as “kumari” refers to the young ladies which states its medicinal property for young ladies especially in the menstrual disorders and also states its property of rejuvenation power for maintaining youngness.Aloe vera is the commonest herb that is grown in small vessels in the houses, because of it medicinal as well as ornamental value. It is also stated as kumarika, kanyaa, grihkanyaa, kanyaa in ayurveda textbooks.

Some Actions Of Aloe That Are Illustrated In The Textbooks Of Ayurveda:

Vranaropana means Wound healing activity. It promotes wound healing. So can be used in wounds, scars.
Bhedaniya means Purgative (powder) action so, can be used in constipation.
Rasayana means having rejuvenative action. So, can be used as a general tonic for all people.
Kumarirogaghna: Kumari means young maidens. So, it alleviates all diseases of young maidens (menstrual disorders)
Artavajanana means promotes menses. So, can be used in amenorrhoea
Raktapitta means alleviates bleeding
Dipana meand increases the digestive fire. So, it is used in indigestion.
Visahara mesns destroys poisons
Plihayakritvriddhihara means it helps in the reduction of the size of spleen and liver. So, it is used in various hepatic and splenomegaly.
Granthi means clears tumours
Visphota means removes pustules.So, it is used in skin disorders.

Use of aloe vera:

The aloe is an effective remedy for intestinal worms in children. Aloe is used as a stimulant for hair growth. It is used to cure piles , cough and colds. The juice of the leaves is used in painful inflammation of the body and chronic ulcers.
The german commission E, ESCOP and WHO has recommended the use of aloe vera in occasional constipation. But, it shouldnot be used in intestinal obstruction , acute inflamed intestinal diseases, ulcerative colitis and appendicitis.
The ayurvedic pharmacopeia of india has recommended the use of fruit pulp in dysmenorrhoea and various liver diseases.
Similarly, various research conducted on use of aloe verahas revealed that it has improved the hypoglycaemic effect of glyburide(glibenclamide) when on tablespoonful of aloe  juice was taken orally in morning and bedtime to thirtysix patientsfor fourty-two days.
Aloe helps in pelvic congestion so, it is  used for various uterine disorders along with iron and carminatives. Aloe  also accelerates the healing of  wounds so, it is used in burns.
But  should not be used for pregnant.

Dose:
Accoring to CCRAS(Central Council For Research In Ayurveda And Siddha) Leaf pulp juice:10-20 ml
Dried leaf pulp juice:125–500 mg powder. (Ayurveda Pharmacoepia of India.)

Regarding the importance of the aloe  it’s use has been extended to cosmetic value besides its medicinal value. There are various cosmetic products which clam to have aloe as one of the constituent. Among them, the juice of aloe  is very common for its medicinal purpose. Aloe juice has been employed for various home made remedies.

Common Use Of Aloe Vera Juice:

  1. Its juice has digestive and stomachic  property. So Aloe vera juice stimulates the digestive fire. Hence can be used in indigestion.
  2. Its juice also has soothing effect of the walls of stomach so, can be used in gastritis.
  3. Aloe have hepato-protective property, so this is used in various hepatic disease like jaundice, hepatomegaly(increased liver size). Aloe vera juice is also used in splenomegaly(increased size of spleen).
  4. It works on the wall of intestine by breaking down the impacted food residues in the intestinal wall hence cleaning the bowel. Aloe juice regulates the bacteria level in the intestine.So, Aloe vera juice  can also be used in irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, diarrhea, constipation.
  5. Its juice helps in the purification of  blood  and  also enhances the quality of skin. So, it can be used in various skin disorders like psoriasis, eczema, ulcers, seborrhoeic dermatitis and mouth ulcers.
  6. Its juice acts as a vehicle for carrying medicines to all the tissues, especially the plasma, blood and reproductive tissues.So, it can be used along with other drugs  as a co-therapy. Drug interaction of aloe vera has not been reported yet.
