Causative factors
According to ayurveda excessive passion, anger and psychic strain results in graying of hair. Person with paittika type of constituent are prone to be affected by this ailment. Person suffering from chronic cold and sinusitis and those who usewarm water for washing their hair are more likely to be victims of this condition.
Treatment
Bhringaraja (Eclipta alba) and amalaki(Emblica officinalis) are popularly used for the treatment of this condition. Medicated oil prepared by boiling these two drugs viz.Maha-bhringaraja tail is used externally for massaging the head. The powder of these two drugs is also used internally in a dose of one teaspoonful thrice daily with milk.
The oil prepared from the seeds of the neem tree (Azadirachta indica) is used for inhalation twice a day for about a month. Along with this, the patient should be advised to take only milk in his diet.
Another drug popularly used for this condition is bhallataka (Semicarpus anacardium). This has a slightly poisonous effect. Normally, this is given to the patient in the form of linctus in a dose of one teaspoonful twice daily followed by milk.
Diet
These therapies will be effective only when the patient observes diet restriction. As far as possible, he should take only milk and sugar. Salt should be avoided. Sour things like curd are very useful. Pungent,hot and spicy food should be avoided.
Other regimens
The patient shouldnot remain awake for long at night and should be kept free from worry, anxiety and passion. If suffering from cold and sinusitis, prompt and careful treatment should be given. Hot water should never be used for washing the hair. Cold water should be used for bathing.
